Competitors take fencing contest right to the wire at NSA Sheep 2010

The 14th Tornado Wire National Fencing Competition, held at NSA 2010, has come to an end after a closely fought battle between some of the country’s finest fencers. Gary Batley Fencing Contractor made it second time lucky for competing in the contest, beating 12 other teams to pick up the prestigious Tornado Wire winners’ trophy and £1,000 cash prize.

A W R Taylor Fencing came in 2nd for the fifth time, narrowly beating seasoned competitors Garth Bradbury Fencing Ltd into 3rd place by one point.

Incredibly dry ground conditions proved to be a real test for the two-man teams, who were challenged to erect approximately 60 metres of Tornado high tensile stock netting in just three hours, with only hand-held equipment. In fact, only seven out of the 13 teams present managed to complete the task within the allotted timeframe.

Competition judge and Tornado Wire MD, Kenny Campbell, comments: “In almost 30 years of holding the competition, we’ve rarely seen such hard ground conditions. Without the aid of modern equipment, the teams had to rely on their years of expertise and sheer strength to overcome the difficult environment. That just over half finished within the allocated time just goes to show how tough the Tornado challenge is – all three prize winners should be extremely proud of their achievements.”

Previous winner Mike Ford shared judging duties with Mr Campbell, awarding points according to strict underground and fence line criteria, with additional points for speed. Held at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire, the biennial event has become the leading showcase in the fencing calendar for demonstrating skill and expertise in the industry.

Allan Froggatt Fencing, Chris Smallwood, J Hubbard & Son, Tony Mears Fencing, RH & CL Bell, Willis Brothers, Jonathan Lean, Farm and Forestry Services, Wells Fencing, and B Wilson Fencing also competed for the title.
