Tornado recently worked with the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and contractor Jim Turner of North Eastern Plant Ltd to design a Titan fence for the Park’s newest residents– a pride of 13 lions rescued from Oradea Zoo in Romania. 1750 metres of our T24-204-8 fencing went to make the 4 metre high barrier which Jim erected this year as part of ‘Lion Country’ – a new 9-acre reserve for the lions which is believed to be the largest non-drive-through lion reserve in the world. The fence has generated a lot of interest because it’s the first time this type of mesh has been used in a zoo enclosure. Yorkshire Wildlife Park has already shared information about its design on a global zoo management website for the benefit of other zoos around the world. The lions, which were poorly housed and suffering from the effects of an inappropriate diet and very inadequate care, became the subject of a national media appeal at the beginning of 2010. Since their high-profile relocation to the Wildlife Park just outside Doncaster, their condition has improved greatly and thousands of visitors have been to see them in their new home.
